Pre-University Studies (PreUS) students have been conditionally admitted to MSU due to not meeting the minimum admissions requirements for MSU. They may take a combination of courses through MSU and through Gallatin College’s Developmental Education program during their first semester. This means that they are MSU students, but they will work with their advisor to choose some classes taught by MSU faculty, and some classes taught by Gallatin College Faculty.

PreUS students can be full time (up to 14 credits) in their first semester through a combination of Math, Writing, Effective Academic Practices, and/or First Year Seminar courses taught by Gallatin College, along with one or two Core 2.0, major, or elective courses through MSU.

A pre-US student's schedule may consist of:

  1. M 065, M 088, or M 096
  2. WRIT 080, WRIT 095, or WRIT 101W
  3. COLS 100 or COLS 101US
  4. Elective, Core 2.0, or Major class
  5. Elective, Core 2.0, or Major class

This may change based on your conversations with your advisor.

Students that are in the pre-US program must earn at least a 2.0 GPA during their first semester. If a student does not receive at least a 2.0 GPA in their first semester, they will be suspended from MSU for one semester and may not take classes at MSU, Gallatin College, or any Montana University System school during that time.

Students may transition out of pre-University Studies after they have completed 7 MSU credits (in classes that have a 100 level or higher – not including COLS 100). Typically, students will transfer into University Studies, or another academic major of their choosing.
