Associate of Arts and Science Degrees FAQ
Gallatin College's A.A. and A.S. degrees (also considered transfer and general education degrees) are offered in-person and online and are designed to meet the needs of students who identify with any of the following:
- are undecided about their educational goals
- prefer small class sizes
- are interested in affordability
- would like personalized academic support
- desire a more gradual entrance into a four-year university
An Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree provides a foundation of general education studies with a concentration of coursework in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
An Associate of Science (A.S.) degree provides a foundation of general education studies with a concentration of coursework in mathematics and natural sciences. A pre-healthcare A.S. degree option is also available.
Both the Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science degrees require completion of 60 college credits with a C- or better. Both degrees include the MSU Core curriculum requirements (~30 credits) plus ~30 credits of electives that allow the student to customize their degree.
Gallatin College is a part of the MSU family, and Gallatin College classes are on an MSU transcript. Therefore, yes, the credits transfer to MSU.
Yes, Gallatin College accepts credits from accredited colleges or universities. Students who have taken classes at MSU do not need to submit a transcript from MSU, as those credits will apply directly to their Gallatin College degree.
Yes! Gallatin College offers online courses in every Core curriculum area, as well as a number of elective course options, so that a student can complete an entire Associate’s degree online. A student does not declare the “online degree program”, however, so it’s also possible to complete the degree with a combination of online and in-person classes.
Gallatin College Core/general education classes are offered on the Gallatin College East campus, MSU main campus, and online.
Yes. Unfortunately, there is no public transportation available to the East campus. A student must have their own vehicle, or have worked out a carpool, to get to classes on the East campus. The East Frontage Road does not have a sidewalk or bike lane, and is not safe for those modes of transportation.
An online course requires the student to be self-disciplined to learn and meet deadlines without regular in-class time with an instructor. There are a few different modes of online courses:
- Asynchronous: Course meets fully online and does not have any regular meeting times. While there will not be weekly meeting times, there will be set deadlines for assignments.
- Synchronous: Course meets fully online but has specific meeting days and times when the class meets in a virtual classroom. Students are expected to attend and participate virtually.
- Hybrid—mix of online and in-person: Course has both online and in-person components, which will include specific meeting days and times for the in-person sessions.
The mode of an online course is pre-determined by the instructor.
Yes! MSU offers a fully online Bachelor's degree with a major in Liberal Studies.
The Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees are considered general education transfer degrees, and do not include a major or minor course of study. Students work with their advisor to follow a curriculum based on their personal, long-term, and education goals, as well as entering skills in math and writing.
If you are or have been enrolled at MSU and still have courses to complete in order to earn an AA or AS degree, please follow these steps:
- Submit an Intent to Register with the MSU Registrar's Office

If you are a former MSU student and you have completed the AA or AS degree requirements, you will follow these same steps but may be able to earn the degree without completing further coursework.
