Fiber Optics Information
The fiber optics portion of ITS 125 includes fiber fundamentals, single-mode and multimode fiber, connector types, cable preparation, fusion splicing, and testing. The goal is to give students practical experience preparing, terminating, splicing, and testing fiber, along with understanding how to interpret test results.
The equipment available for instruction includes:
-
A Fluke Networks Versiv system with fiber loss and length testing, OTDR capabilities, and copper Ethernet cabling certification.
-
Two Sumitomo single-fiber, core-alignment fusion splicers.
-
An older Sumitomo mass fusion splicer.
-
A couple of additional fusion splicers.
This equipment supports hands-on instruction in fiber installation, splicing, and testing.
