Medical Laboratory Assistant

Medical Laboratory Assistants work within pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes wherever clinical laboratory testing is performed.

Certification of Applied Science (C.A.S.) in Medical Laboratory Assistant

The Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate is a one-year program where students learn learn to perform clinical laboratory tests, from basic to complex, in areas like clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology/transfusion medicine, microbiology, body fluid analysis, and laboratory operations. Medical Laboratory Assistants complete a range of work in many different healthcare settings including hospitals, clinics, and research settings.

After successfully completing the program, students will be eligable take the Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant (CMLA) national exam through American Medical Technologists (AMT).

  • Demonstrate the steps to accurately type, crossmatch, and prepare blood for transfusions.
  • Employ safety precautions and quality control throughout the laboratory environment and practices.
